Provence
Undertaking an art residency at NG Creative Residency, located in the remote French village of Eygalieres, Provence in May/June of 2019. Kerry has created colourful abstracted landscapes to embody the texture and the patterns of the countryside. She travelled around the area from the Les Alpilles to the crystal-clear waters of Les Calanques du Cassis, to Cezanne’s studio in Aix En Provence, walked from the bountiful markets of Saint Remy to the asylum of Saint-Paul de Mausole -where Van Gogh spent a year of his life. With excursions to Arles, Avignon, Les Baux, Kerry experienced the vibrant brocante marches, local wineries and spent time wandering in the poppy fields and visiting museums.
Using a mixed medium approach Kerry has worked on Belgium and French linen allowing the surface to be a part of the composition. With her mediums of pen, ink and acrylic paint, and her use of a layering technique Kerry endeavours to replicate the landscape with her unique interpretation.
Kerry’s time at the residency was used to gather information and imagery that would play into the language of her work. There was a small salon style evening held while at NG Creative, for local patrons of the arts.
Since returning her sketches, paintings and photography have helped Kerry to map the body of this exhibition. Delays due to Covid19 means that the exhibition has had time to percolate and evolve. Kerry aspires to take the audience on a journey to Provence, that is currently out of reach except through imagery.
